Bay Area ITS Architecture

The San Francisco Bay Area Regional Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Plan, sponsored by MTC, is a roadmap for transportation systems integration in the Bay Area over the next 10 years. The plan provides methods to make the most out of technological advances by developing a strategy for deployment and a framework, or architecture, for linking the region's transportation systems.

MTC completed the Bay Area ITS Architecture in December 2007. The Architecture is an interactive, project-based Web site. For more details about the Architecture, read the Executive Summary (PDF). For information about the Architecture, see the Frequently Asked Questions.

The architecture is an important tool used by:

  • MTC to better reflect integration opportunities and operational needs into the transportation planning process.
  • Operating agencies to recognize and plan for transportation integration opportunities in the region.
  • Other organizations and individuals that use the transportation system in the San Francisco Bay Area.

This regional ITS architecture has a time horizon with a particular focus on those systems and interfaces that are likely to be implemented in the next ten years. The architecture covers the broad spectrum of Intelligent Transportation Systems, including Traffic Management, Transit Management, Traveler Information, Emergency Management, and Emergency/Incident Management over this time horizon.
